NORTH SOUTH COORDINATORS
History
The Asian-American Basketball scene has been a favorite California past time and has only grown upwards over the last 60 years. Today, there are over thirty various Asian Basketball Club Organizations throughout the State. It was in 1993, when tournament founders, Russ Hiroto and Jack Mai, canvassed Northern California, and Kevin Sakamoto called upon the Southern California Asian Organizations to scout the top Asian-American basketball talents to create what is now known as the North South High School Basketball Tournament. With the assembly of sixteen teams, including 160 All-Star student athletes, the inaugural tournament was held at Buchser Middle School, in Santa Clara. The boys and girls All-Star games were held on separate weekends, until the following year where the tournament was redesigned to a one-weekend event, alternating between Northern and Southern California venues.
